Smiles of Accomplishment … “Just because I can!”
Salem Home Residents Enjoying User-Friendly Access to and from Their Home
WINKLER, MB – Salem Home Residents’ smiles of joy and accomplishment have been in abundance since the moment the doors of the new Front Entrance opened for the first time on October 12th! A number of residents make trips in and out of their home … sometimes just to the bottom of the ramp “to check out the weather” or, in their words “just because I can!” This feeling of freedom … no longer a prisoner in their own home … Residents say, “won’t get old anytime soon!”
“It doesn’t get any better than this,” said Arlen Hildebrand, Salem Foundation Board Chair, “seeing Resident quality of life improved … giving them the satisfaction of entering and exiting their home on their own. Seeing their smiles is very gratifying and rewarding … knowing the work of Salem Foundation, thanks to all the generous community members is making a difference … giving Residents a positive lived experience!” Renovations to the Front Entrance were possible thanks to the support of many Winkler businesses, congregations and community members, the surrounding Rural Municipalities, and organizations such as The Thomas Sill Foundation. “A heartfelt thank you to all … who gave of their time … who supported the project financially … and made sure it was done properly to ensure the Residents received this wonderful gift!”
Residents are also enjoying the natural light, the warmth of the sunshine and the view of 15th Street through the large windows in the “staging/sitting area” just inside the sliding doors. It’s a wonderful space to read, watch the traffic, visit, wait for visitors or wave good-bye.
“Salem Home Board of Directors thanks every organization, church congregation, business and community member who has made the new front entrance possible”, said Raymond Grenier, Salem Home Board Chair. “Residents, and the whole Salem organization are blessed to be part of such a caring community! The user-friendliness of the new entrance is benefiting residents and visitors alike … whether it’s the automatic opening doors, the larger portal area or the spacious staging/sitting area. Thank You!”
Salem Home’s Front Entrance includes:
Doors with a photocell that automatically open as Residents approach.
Sidewalk access, allowing Residents to exit and enter without having to cross the portal driveway.
A longer sloping ramp, along the sidewalk, giving Residents freedom to travel up and down the ramp themselves instead of having to rely on others to enter and exit their home.
An inviting staging/sitting area inside the front doors.
Approximately $80,000 remains to be raised to meet the financial commitment of the project. Donations can be dropped off at the Salem Home Business Office, or by contacting Salem Foundation or Salem Home Board Members.
