In the month of March the residents of Salem Home travelled around the globe and explored four cultures. Each culture had a different, yet significant tie to Salem Home.

We started our journey in Mexico! Did you know that 25% of the residents at Salem were born in Mexico, and many, many more have spent a significant amount of time living in, or visiting Mexico? Our time in Mexico kicked off with a fiesta! Rosa, a volunteer originally from Mexico City, created fun pinatas, played music, showed off traditional clothing, and entertained us with some dancing. We had a special meet and greet with our favorite local celebrity, Abe of Schtrucklaunt and prepared pico de gallo.

Next, with the help of Kate and Olena, we explored Ukraine. We learned about traditional clothing, wedding customs, different areas in Ukraine, and the history of Ukrainian immigration to Winkler. We created Ukrainian Easter eggs and got a taste of many traditional Ukrainian dishes.

In honour of St. Patrick’s Day we made a stop in Ireland. We baked Irish soda bread, learnt about traditional Irish clothing and welcomed Tom the Irish Cowboy to put on concert. We had a St. Patrick’s Day party complete with Irish Bingo and green snacks.

Our tour ended in Germany. We were entertained by the Toews Sisters and by Joan Van der Linde, who all sang in both Low German and High German (as well as some English). We toured different attractions and cities in Germany and ate binnenschtick.

Now, we have returned home and are eagerly awaiting spring, sunshine, and melted snow! Thank you to Regional Connections for helping us connect with different volunteers for our cultural celebrations!
