Our Life Program's goal is to enrich the daily lives of our residents. Check out some of the fun things going on at Salem Home.
One of life's creature comforts - food. Our team of cooks, dieticians and cookie baking volunteers work hard to make sure everyone is eating healthy and happy.

Welcome to Salem Home
People come here to live.
From the moment you walk through the doors at Salem Home, it’s clear that this is a special place. The lighting is warm, the chairs in the lobby are cozy, and on many days, the smell of freshly baked cookies fills the air.

Far from the institutional setting you might expect, this personal care home in Winkler feels more like a place where people carry on with their lives. And they do. Everything at Salem Home is centred around the idea that people come here to live. That means we take every opportunity to make our residents feel this is their home, from our model of ‘Relationship-Centred Care’ to the facility itself.
Common Care
Common areas are at the centre, making units feel more like neighbourhoods.
Salem Home’s ‘Relationship-Centred-Care’ model is complimented by a ‘cluster care’ approach to each unit. By putting residents with similar needs together, it’s easier to build relationships.

Each 'neigbourhood' has a name, and is centred around a commons, where you’ll find residents having a chat, eating a meal or playing a competitive game on the Wii system. There are spots for crafting, gathering around a piano to sing, watching television or playing games.

As Jen Giesbrecht says, “...it seems like a home, it doesn’t seem like they’re living in an institution. I think that’s what Salem is trying to create - this is their home. It’s not my place of work, I’m working in their home, and that’s what we’re trying to keep going here. I think that’s the best part.”
Comfort at Every Turn
Whether it’s Maple Court or Peace Drive, there’s always a cozy spot around the corner.
We’ve taken every effort to make Salem Home as home-like as possible. Each unit is designed to be like a neighbourhood, and there’s always plenty to do and see. Just like in the lobby, every hallway is painted in inviting colours with warm lighting and artwork hung tastefully along the wall.

There’s life happening everywhere. Instead of empty corners in the hallway, there’s always a couple of comfortable chairs and a side-table or two. Wherever you might be, there’s a nice little spot nearby to sit and read, enjoy somebody’s company or simply have a little rest.

Turn another corner and you’ll find further abundance of activity: someone working on a sewing project, a few people putting the finishing pieces into a puzzle, or friends playing a game of dominoes.
Home Sweet Home
Home is more than a place to sleep
A room is more than a bed, it’s the space each resident calls home. The rooms at Salem Home are designed to be as home-like as possible. Like every other part of the facility, each room is set up with warm lighting, comfortable seating and many personal touches.

Like our residents, each room is unique. The already beautiful rooms quickly turn into Home Sweet Home with our resident's personal belongings. Furthermore, rooms line the halls in a way that feels like a row of apartment suites.
Town Square
From Oma’s Kitchen to the courtyard garden, chapel and beauty parlour, the Heritage Room is at the centre of it all.
What happens when the whole family comes to visit? You wouldn’t want to entertain in your bedroom, would you? Thanks to Oma’s Kitchen, larger groups of visitors can get together, cook a family dinner and visit. It’s like Sunday dinner- whenever it strikes your fancy.

And speaking of Sunday, Salem Home is a faith-based personal care home, which means that church is central to what we do. Our chapel seats a good crowd, which is great, because most of our residents like to come and worship, learn and have fellowship.

There’s a beautiful courtyard garden, a beauty parlour for a haircut or perm, and plenty of space for conversation and all kinds of games. And if that’s not enticing enough, the smells of fresh baking from the kitchen will surely draw you in.

Welcome to Salem Home, a personal care home where people come to live.
